REINVENT THE WHEEL

What does this phrase 'Reinvent the wheel' mean? In general it means that working on creating something which has already been created by somebody else. While many people are against the whole idea of reinventing the wheel, there are people who emphasize on reinventing the wheel.

If you take the example of a wheel it has been reinvented many times over since past several centuries. Even things like books, paper, pen etc have seen this phenomenon.

Modern technology advancements have happened because of the large scale reinventions in various fields including software tools, frameworks, programming etc.

The automobile industry is the best example if you see the number of reinventions that has happened in last few decades.

So how do you determine if you have to reinvent something? If there are no recent reinventions in a field and you still know that some of the problems can be addressed in a better manner to offer an optimum solution. As they say that necessity is the mother of invention, if you feel that something is must needed then that is where you need to start.
